Jazz Audition Results

Hello everyone! Thank you to everybody that tried out for the jazz ensembles. You worked really hard and it showed. Know that these placements aren't guaranteed for the entire year- if someone in Cranbury Jazz shows me he or she has made a lot of improvement and I think they belong in the Advanced Jazz Band, I can move that student up. On the flip side, if a student in the Advanced Jazz Band slacks off during the year I have the option to move him or her to Cranbury Jazz. Rehearsals start this week, with Advanced Jazz Band Tuesday 7:30-8:25am, and Cranbury Jazz Friday 12:35-1:00pm.

Jazz Audition Sign-up Sheet

Hello everyone,

Welcome back to school! For those of you that want to sign up for one of the 2 jazz ensembles, there is a sign-up sheet on the outside of the door to the band room (room 52). Since I want to have all of the auditions in back to back, we will be having the sign-up times from 7:00am-8:26am on Tuesday, September 13. Each student will have a 2 minute slot, which is enough time for me to hear everything I need to make my decision. Because the time slots are so close together, students should be in the band room, warmed up, and prepared to go in BEFORE their time slot. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you!

Jazz Audition Etudes

Hello everyone!

I hope you all had a fun and safe summer. We're getting close to the school year now, and I know there is some confusion about the etudes for the jazz audition, but don't worry! Here's what you should do. If you were handed a a paper copy of the etude or it's here on the blog, great! You'll play that along with your scales and sight reading for the audition. If your etude is not here and you didn't receive a paper copy, it's OK! Don't worry at all. Since the audition is just for placement in one of the bands, I just need to see how well you can play. You will just play your scales and sight reading for the audition, and won't be marked down or penalized for not having the etude.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you this year, and I'm really excited to start making music!

Jazz Band Audition Music 2011-2012

Hello students and parents,

If you are reading this, it means you are interested in playing in one of our jazz ensembles. That’s great! Audition materialscan be found here for every instrument. Wind/piano players will have to play scales, an etude, and sight read a piece. Drum set students will have to play an etude, play in a few styles, and sight read. The auditions will be held once the school year starts up in September, and students will be placed in one of our two bands. The advanced jazz band is the audition-based group and will hold a certain amount of spots. Those who audition but don’t make it into the advanced band will be placed into the jazz band. All students who audition will get a chance to play in one of the bands.

I am looking forward to working with all of you this school year. I know we’ll make great music together and learn a lot from one another.

Sincerely,
Mr. Pollack

Princeton High Jazz Festival

The Princeton High School Jazz Festival is quickly approaching! Here is all of the important information you need to know:

PRINCETON HIGH JAZZ FESTIVAL
Friday, February 11 (for middle school bands)

Cranbury Advanced Jazz Band students should plan to arrive at PHS between 4:30PM-4:45PM. Guest artist Tim Hagans will be giving a clinic for all students starting at 5:00PM. His clinic is not to be missed!

Following his clinic, Cranbury students will begin our time in the warm-up room at 6:00PM. Our performance will start at 6:40PM.
After our performance, the band will then go to the sight-reading room at 7:00PM. After their sight-reading session, they will have the opportunity to hear the performances of the other middle school bands as well as the PHS Studio Band who will be joined by Mr. Hagans. The awards ceremony will begin at 10:00PM.

Advanced Jazz Band members should plan to wear the same concert attire they wore for the winter concert (our standard black and white).

It would also be wise for students to have eaten dinner on their own prior to the clinic, as they will not have the opportunity to do so again until after our sight-reading session has ended. The cafe at PHS will be open to students following their performance, but not before.

Including Cranbury, there are eight middle school bands slated to perform, so it should be a great night of music!

Please contact me via email if you have any questions. ehaltmeier@cranburyschool.org
